about

This is a collection of field recordings of sounds encountered in and around the Embarras River in what is now Coles County, Illinois (original home of the Kickapoo). During the day, raptors like hawks and turkey vultures are common in the sky. At night, owl and frogs can be heard, or coyote and foxes. Prairie night-birds such as bobwhite and whip-poor-will are becoming rarer.

The recordings were done on a handheld stereo digital recorder with bidirectional microphones. A homemade wooden stand and wind buffer of furry cloth were used over the microphones and secured with soft elastic.

The recordings took place during the winter season of late 2022 and early 2023. All recordings happened between mid-morning and early afternoon. The weather ranged from foggy to clear, sunny, and windy. The sounds include water flowing past a fallen log in the river, birds calling, wind blowing in gusts, trees rustling, rubber boots wading in the water and walking on land, waves lapping the shore, traffic on county roads...
